Le Chaton Fat: The Fattest AI Model That Never Existed
There is no AI model called Le Chaton Fat. No weights, no API, no benchmark. Here is how a Mistral cat joke became the AI community's favourite running gag.

Let me save you a search: there is no model called Le Chaton Fat. No weights, no API, no benchmark. It is not a leak, it is not a roadmap, it is not a Mistral product. It is a joke, and over the last few days it became the funniest one the AI community has told itself in a while.
Because a few people genuinely went looking for the download link, I think the bit deserves a proper write-up. So here is what is going on with the fattest model that never existed.
Where It Came From
The setup is real, even if the punchline is not. Mistral's CEO floated rebranding the company's assistant, Le Chat, under a new name. That sparked the usual passionate debate on Reddit, and somewhere in the replies the community did what communities do: instead of arguing about the rebrand, they started inventing increasingly ridiculous feline successors to Le Chat.
Le Chat is French for "the cat." The diminutive is le chaton, "the kitten." Add one absurd English adjective and you get Le Chaton Fat, a name that is grammatically cursed in two languages at once, which is exactly why it stuck.
The Spec Sheet
Once the name existed, the fake spec sheet wrote itself. The community settled on a fictional frontier model with the following very serious characteristics:
- 30T+ parameters. Not 30 billion. Trillion. With a T. Because if you are going to invent a model, invent a big one.
- 1000 meows per second. The throughput metric the MLPerf committee forgot to standardise.
- Maximum chonk. The only scaling law that matters.
None of these are real measurements. That is the point. The humour lives in the gap between the deadpan presentation and the complete nonsense underneath, which is the same gravity that holds up most good engineering jokes.
How It Escalated
A name and a spec sheet are a meme. What turned Le Chaton Fat into a full community event was the production values. People did not just talk about the model, they built artefacts for it:
- Fake launch announcements, formatted to look exactly like a real model release post.
- Fabricated benchmark charts, with Le Chaton Fat comfortably crushing the frontier models from OpenAI and Anthropic, because in a fictional benchmark you always win.
- Mock regulatory notices, including a fake EU statement claiming the model had been barred from the bloc because it was too heavy to regulate.
That last one is my favourite, because it is the kind of joke that only works if you understand the real anxiety underneath it. Which brings me to why this particular bit caught fire now and not six months ago.
Why It Landed
Memes are never only about the surface. Le Chaton Fat took off against a very specific backdrop: a move to bar foreign entities from using Anthropic's newest models. Suddenly the question of which labs you are even allowed to build on, depending on where you sit stopped being abstract.
So the European crowd did the healthy thing and laughed about it. Le Chaton Fat quietly became a stand-in for the idea of a powerful, gloriously unbothered European alternative, one too chonky for anyone to regulate, ban, or export-control. It is a sovereignty argument wearing a cat costume. That is a lot of weight for a fake model to carry, and it carries it well precisely because nobody has to defend a roadmap that does not exist.
The Best Part
The detail that makes this whole thing land is that Mistral's own CEO joined in. When the company at the centre of the joke is in on it rather than firing off a cease-and-desist, the meme stops being mockery and becomes a shared in-joke across the entire field. That is the difference between a community laughing at you and a community laughing with you, and Mistral read the room correctly.
The Takeaway
There is no Le Chaton Fat. There is no 30T parameter kitten, no 1000 meows per second, and the EU has not issued any notices about feline obesity. If you went looking for the weights, I am sorry, and also a little delighted, because that means the bit worked perfectly.
What there is, is a healthy sign about a field that takes itself extremely seriously most of the time. Every so often it is good to remember that the people building this stuff can still register a deadpan benchmark chart for a 30T parameter cat and make the whole industry smile. Maximum chonk. No notes.
